Laid back day, summit registration done, nice deep tissue massage for the sore back and more interesting conversations
Chat with Pluribus Networks, the network hypervisor company. I need to spend more time to fully understand what their technology is, but on the outset, appears very valuable to stop the server sprawl to setup network services and make network debugging lot easier. They bring in compute and storage towards the switch, thereby, the switch being capable of a complete appliance. They are targeting dev/ test scenarios for now. I can see how they be a Cloud-In-a-Box appliance. If you are attending the summit, their demo is at 11 am today or check out their booth.
Chat with Solinea, the OpenStack Software and Services company. It was nice to meet Ken Pepple again, along with the entire Solinea team. They are a Startup Sponsor at the summit, go visit them at booth C50. (Disclaimer: I’ve worked with Solinea this summer on couple of projects).

Thoughts going in to the summit:
- What is OpenStack Core?
Kept thinking more on my earlier day’s conversations with Chris. What is OpenStack Core? In my view, we are spending too much defining something that doesn’t need to be defined. For an open source, core keeps changing and it needs. Else, it will become stagnant and irrelevant. Imagine a Linux kernel without device drivers. Yes, it will keep it micro, but does it help users? In the same context, trying to define core to compute, network and storage will limit the user experience. I am not involved in the Core discussions, but I will try to attend the sessions to understand better. I might be completely wrong, but I wish the community continues to be open about what is core.
- Is OpenStack ignoring the eco-system?
Interesting post from James Urquhart on if OpenStack is ignoring the eco-system. While I agree with him on the need to embrace other opensource projects (CloudFoundry, OpenShift), I don’t totally agree that the OpenStack community is ignoring the eco-system. Solum doesn’t maketh OpenStack.
- What can one do with an OpenStack cloud?
User stories are interesting, they increase the confidence of someone who is considering OpenStack. However, I see the focus on the infrastructure numbers. Yes, they are important. But, if I give an OpenStack cloud to a user, what can she do with it? I have had at least a few customer asking for this these couple of days. Chris Kemp was strongly emphasizing it earlier night. I am going to watch out for user stories that emphasize what applications they run on, what kind of workloads they have had success with on OpenStack.
