Independent contributors provide a vendor neutral, impartial perspective to the community. They are not affected by sudden change in priorities from the management. They are not bound by limitations if any, from their employer. They also face some hurdles — finding niche area to make an impact, find funding to support their contribution efforts and sometimes not having the ‘brand name’.
This talk highlights the contributions of independent contributors, demonstrating their impact across code, documentation, evangelism and community outreach. This presents some of the challenges faced by them. Finally, this talk also compares them with independent contributors to other open source projects and shows how OpenStack community can deriver best out of them.
