I proposed a panel discussion on Enterprise applications on OpenStack clouds titled “Thinking Beyond Dev/ Test Clouds: running Enterprise applications on OpenStack clouds”. We have kickass panelists (listed alphabetically: Subbu Allamaraju, Randy Bias, Chris Kemp, Krishnan Subramanian and Ken Pepple who don’t need any introduction. In this post, I will explain the motivation behind this proposal and its goals in detail. Here is the proposal summary:

This panel discusses the class of Enterprise applications that consumers have had success running on OpenStack clouds. This is a followup to "OpenStack in Enterprise" Session during HK summit (https://www.openstack.org/summit/openstack-summit-hong-kong-2013/session-videos/presentation/openstack-in-the-enterprise-customers-prove-it) and builds upon collective experience since then.   
Goals:  
1) Enumerate/ elucidate successful Enterprise applications running on OpenStack clouds  
2) Discuss issues/ challenges faced while running enterprise class of applications

Motivation:

If you had followed my notes from the HongKong summit, one of key take way was that customers still needed guidance on the kind of workloads to run on OpenStack. During the last year, there had been rapid progress on enterprise interest/ adoption of OpenStack too. With increased interest from enterprise customers, guidance on enterprise workloads becomes more important. And such guidance could be on issues, success stories, tips, what to watch for etc. What more can be of better guidance than asking from the experts themselves? Thus came this proposal

No doubt these sessions add great value from different experts individually. However, our panel brings multiple experts together to provide different perspectives. We have experts (Subbu and Ken) with first hand experience running enterprise applications on OpenStack clouds, experts (Randy and Chris) with enterprise customers and intimate knowledge of the competition, and strategist/ analyst (Krishnan) with intimate knowledge of partner eco-system, open source technologies and cloud computing overall. They all know what it takes to run enterprise applications on OpenStack, what kind of applications have been run successfully and most importantly what is lacking with OpenStack that might make running enterprise applications difficult.
